GDPR – Keeping Data Safe training requirement

We all have a role to play to keep people in our MS community safe. Data protection is all about keeping personal data safe and so protecting the rights and privacy of individuals.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be launching a new GDPR – Keeping Data Safe online training (e-learning) for volunteers.

You’ll need to complete this if you’ve not done GDPR training in the last two years and you have access to personal data via MS Society systems in any way.

The training and multiple-choice test should take no longer than 45 minutes and you don’t have to complete it in one go. But you will need to complete it to retain access to our systems, such as MS Society email or the Portal.

How will I know if this affects me?

If you need to complete the GDPR- Keeping Data Safe e-learning, you’ll receive an email notification from our online learning platform called Talent LMS. This will appear in your inbox from 'MS Society e-learning gateway'.

You’ll be sent the e-learning if you’ve not done GDPR training in the last two years, and you’re in one of the six roles below and/or you have an MS Society email account or access to the Portal.

  • Group Coordinators
  • Support Volunteers
  • Lead Support Volunteers
  • Finance Volunteers
  • Communication Volunteers
  • Admin Volunteers

Why is GDPR – Keeping Data Safe so important?

It’s vital you complete the e-learning because:

  • It will support you to look after data safely - not just for the MS Society, but wherever you are, and whoever’s personal information you’re entrusted with.

  • Memories fade, and laws and organisational processes and policies change. This e-learning provides a timely refresher on the principles of data protection.

  • Personal data relates to real people, and failing to protect their data can have real consequences for the very individuals that we’re here to support.

  • The MS Society is legally required to ensure that all individuals who use or record people’s data on its behalf receive regular training. If volunteers don’t understand how to keep data safe, we can’t give access to systems which hold personal information.

  • It will support you to overcome fear of data breaches. The e-learning covers how to recognise a data breach and get help. The worst thing to do is ignore a breach.

  • Criminals trying to steal data for personal gain are becoming more sophisticated. The e-learning will support you to stay vigilant.

Next steps

In the coming weeks, you’ll receive an email notification from Talent LMS (our online training platform) directing you to the e-learning, so please keep a look out for it.

You’ll also receive further details about how to log in and what to do if you’re an existing user but can’t remember your password.
