Call your MP

Back in March, the government announced plans to make big changes to disability benefits. If the changes go ahead, the proposals will cut the support some people receive from payments like Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit. This will make it harder for some people with MS to access financial support.

Soon, the Bill that paves the way for these changes will come to the UK Parliament. Right now, MPs are considering which way they’ll vote when the Bill goes through parliament. We know these cuts risk making life even more difficult for people living with MS, so we need MPs to hear from all of us with a clear message to protect disability benefits. That’s why we’re asking you to call your MP.

To find out who your MP is, you can search the directory of MPs. Once you know who your MP is, you can call parliament’s switchboard on 020 7219 3000 and ask to be transferred to their office.

If you’re wondering what to say on the phone, here are a few top tips:

  • Tell your MP’s office that you’re a constituent and give them your name and postcode
  • Explain you’re calling about the government’s proposed benefit cuts and briefly say why you’re concerned
  • If you or a loved one are worried about being personally affected by the cuts, you might want to share some of your story and the impact these changes might have on you

Calling your MP is a quick and easy way to get your message across. It’s their job to listen to and represent us. And MPs want to hear from us, our stories and the issues that matter to us most. Lots of MPs are unsure what to do next, which is why a quick phone call can make all the difference.

If you speak with your MP or their team, please let us know. And if you have any questions about calling your MP, we’re here to help. You can email us at [email protected].
