Resizing pictures for social media

Profile pictures and cover photos are among the very first things people see when they visit your social media profile. These days, people are worried about fake news, fake accounts and fake Facebook Pages. It’s important your group’s profile or Page looks authentic and trustworthy.

Profile pictures

Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram profile pictures appear circular on your profile or Facebook Page. You can find pre-sized MS Society logos for social media here.

You can also order your group's logo for social media here.

If you do need to resize a social media logo, Canva is a useful, free tool which provides social media picture templates. Just follow these steps:

  • Go to https://www.canva.com/

  • Search ‘circular logo’ in the search bar.

  • Select ‘create a blank circular logo’.

  • Select ‘uploads’ from the tool bar on the left and then ‘upload media’.

  • Select the image you want to use from your computer files.

  • Once your image has uploaded, drag and drop it into the blank white template on the right (you won’t need to resize it but you can click on the image and move it around to make it central in the template, if it’s not already). You can reverse anything you do, so play around with it.

  • When you’re happy with it, click ‘share’ at the top right of the screen, select ‘download’ and then ‘download’ again.

  • Once you’ve saved it on your device, it’s ready to be uploaded to Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter) or Instagram.

Cover / banner photos on Facebook or X

You can order branded social media banners here.

If you're using your own image, generally a landscape image (an image that is wider than it is tall) should work. However, if you need to resize your image, Canva is a useful, free tool which provides social media picture templates. Just follow these steps to resize your cover / banner image.

  • Go to https://www.canva.com/

  • Search ‘Facebook cover’ or ‘’X/Twitter header’ in the search bar.

  • Click on the blank template option.

  • Select ‘uploads’ from the tool bar on the left and then ‘upload media’.

  • Once your image has uploaded, drag and drop it into the blank white template on the right.

  • You’ll then need to resize the image so that it covers the template. You can do this by dragging the corners of the image to make it bigger or smaller.

  • You can select which part of the picture you want in the template by clicking on the image and moving it around. You can reverse anything you do, so play around with it.

  • When you’re happy with it, click ‘share’ at the top right of the screen and select ‘download’, then ‘download’ again.

  • Once you’ve saved it on your device, it’s ready to be uploaded to Facebook or X.
