A holiday message from Chief Executive, Michelle Mitchell

Happy holidays everybody!

As we head into the festive season I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone happy holidays and thank you for your fantastic contributions this year.

Since joining the MS Society in late September I’ve had the most wonderful, warm welcome. People have been friendly, encouraging and forthright in their views and I’d like to thank you all for making it such a pleasant introduction.

I’ve already seen and done a lot at the organisation - from visiting branches and attending our AGM, to being part of the MS Society Awards and celebrating the amazing contributions the MS community has made to people affected by MS. I’ve been truly inspired and humbled by all that I’ve seen, and the passion and commitment from you and the MS community is the envy of many other like-minded organisations.

As you know this was a special year for the MS Society as we celebrated our 60th anniversary. It has been a great opportunity to reflect on just how far we have come in the last 60 years, and to consider the challenges ahead and how we can realise our vision of a world free from the effects of MS.

It’s clear that right now is a difficult time to live with MS. Government reforms to benefits and an ongoing funding crisis in social care mean that for many, there are additional challenges on top of the daily problems that living with MS presents. As supporters, members, volunteers and staff we’ve worked hard together to fight for the interests of people with MS on these issues, and we’ll continue to do so into 2014.

But there’s also real cause for hope that through our research programme we can create a brighter future. We’ve already achieved significant breakthroughs in MS research in recent years and with your support, we can continue to innovate and play a genuinely leading global role in developing treatments that can stop, slow or reverse the effects of MS.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment – and I wish you all the very best for the festive season.

Michelle Mitchell
Chief Executive MS Society
