Maintaining access to your group’s social media accounts

We want to help you maintain the longevity of your group’s social media accounts, to ensure the effort you put into setting up and running them doesn’t later go to waste. So, we’re asking groups to share access to their social media accounts with the Volunteer Engagement and Communications Team.

Why are we asking this?

Often, when the volunteer looking after the social media for a group leaves, or forgets the login details, other members of the group aren’t able to carry on managing the account(s). This has resulted in many groups having more than one profile on a social media platform, or multiple Facebook Pages or Facebook groups.

How does this affect the community?

This can cause confusion for people who are new to the local group and looking for support via social media. They might think there’s no longer an active group in the area or read out-of-date information. They may be confused by multiple profiles for what is actually the same group.

We’re really keen to help avoid this scenario which is why it’s important to share access to your account(s) with the Volunteer Engagement and Communications Team. Please be reassured that members of staff won’t get involved in the day-to-day management of your account – this is a space for you and your group!

But to future-proof your account and ensure someone will always be able to access it, please follow the instructions below.

How to share access to your account(s)

Please see details below for instructions on how to share access to your social media accounts. You can also find this information in the ‘Maintaining access to your account’ section of the Social Media Toolkit for Volunteers here. In the toolkit, you'll also find lots of handy tips, ideas and guidance on using social media to reach and connect with more people in your area.

Sharing access to your Facebook Page

Depending on when you set up your Facebook Page, you’ll either have a ‘Classic’ Page or a ‘New’ Page.

Please add the Volunteer Engagement and Communications Team account (Karen Mssociety) as an admin to your Facebook Page. You may have noticed recently that Karen Mssociety has already friend requested you or started following / liked your page. By adding this account as an admin, you will not need to share your login details.

You can find instructions on how to add an admin to your Page by clicking this link

Alternatively, you can send your login details to [email protected]. Your login details will be stored safely and securely.

If you use the same password for other websites or personal accounts, you can find instructions on how to update it here before sharing it with us.

Please ensure at least one other volunteer in your group also has admin rights for the Facebook Page.
