New Facebook guidance for groups

Avoiding page closures

We’ve heard from some of our groups that their Facebook pages are being suspended due to ‘impersonation’. We believe this is due to pages using the same logo as the MS Society official Facebook page. We’re contacting Facebook for further guidance on this issue.

In the meantime, we recommend changing your page’s profile picture to a new logo that you can find here. If you’d like to change your banner picture, there are also some photographs you may use. While we can’t guarantee that this will prevent all page suspensions, we hope it offers an interim solution.

Please also ensure your bio reads something like ‘We’re volunteers and run the local MS Society group in [PLACE NAME]. Views are our own.’

We know that problems with Facebook pages strongly impact the way you connect with your groups. We’re working to solve these issues as soon as possible and will keep you updated with any new guidance.

Admin access to pages

While we look into page closures, there is another issue which often comes up that you can help to prevent!

Groups occasionally get locked out of their Facebook accounts due to someone leaving without passing on login details. Once this situation occurs, there’s unfortunately nothing we can do to help. But there are actions you can take now to make sure you’re never locked out:

  • Add the Volunteer Engagement and Communications Team account (Karen Mssociety) as an admin for your Facebook group or page. This is purely a back-up measure, and the team will never get involved in the day-to-day management of your account.
  • Send your log-in details to [email protected], so the team can store them securely for you.
  • Always have more than one volunteer with admin rights to your account.
