MS Runs Ireland: Colin’s incredible run for the MS community

This June, three runners will take on an extraordinary 350-mile challenge across Ireland to raise money and awareness for the MS community.

One of them, Belfast runner Colin Goodman, is living with MS and is determined to show that a diagnosis does not define what someone can achieve.

An incredible challenge with a powerful purpose

In June, Colin Goodman will set off on an epic journey across Ireland. Together with his brother Andrew and fellow runner, Matt Knaggs from Ohio. Colin will run 350 miles from Mizen Head in the south of Ireland to Malin Head in the north.

Over the course of 10 to 12 days, the team will run an average of 30 to 35 miles every day, climbing around 19,000 feet of elevation. Their route will take them across coastal roads, rural countryside and steep climbs.

They are calling their challenge MS Runs Ireland and their goal is simple. They want to raise as much money and awareness as possible for people affected by MS.

Why this run means so much?

For Colin, this challenge is deeply personal. Colin lives with MS and is passionate about raising money for research.

“This isn’t just a long run,” Colin says. “It’s about purpose. Since being diagnosed with MS I’ve been passionate about raising money for research that could improve treatments and bring us closer to a cure.”

Colin has tried this challenge before but was unable to complete it. This year, he is determined to finish what he started.

“Every mile is about proving that MS doesn’t have to sideline anyone. It’s about friendship, perseverance and showing people living with MS or other chronic illnesses that life can still be full of adventure.”

Running together as a family and community

Colin will be running alongside his brother Andrew, who says being part of the challenge is incredibly meaningful.

“Living with MS doesn’t mean giving up on challenges. It means redefining them. Running alongside Colin and Matt is about showing what’s possible and standing up for the whole MS community.”

The challenge also highlights something many people affected by MS know well. The condition does not just affect the person diagnosed. It also affects families, friends and loved ones who support them every day.

Supporting the MS community

The money raised through MS Runs Ireland will support the work of the MS community across Ireland and beyond.

Funds will be shared between:

  • MS Society Northern Ireland

  • MS Ireland

  • MS Run the US

This will help fund vital research, support services and community programmes so people living with MS do not face the condition alone.

Elaine Brownlee, Community Fundraiser at MS Society Northern Ireland, says the challenge is inspiring.

“Colin, Andrew and Matt are taking on an extraordinary physical and mental challenge. Their determination sends a powerful message of hope and will help us continue delivering support locally while investing in research for better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”

A reminder of why our work matters

Across the UK, more than 150,000 people live with MS, including around 5,300 people in Northern Ireland. MS affects the brain and spinal cord and can impact how people move, think and feel. Symptoms vary widely and are often invisible.

Stories like Colin’s are a powerful reminder of why the work we do matters and the strength and resilience of the MS community.
