Nominate a shining star!

2022 - we've launched our new recognition programme, Impact Awards, which has replaced Shining Stars. For more information, please visit the MS Society website by clicking this link.

In such a challenging year, we’ve all been cheered by those making outstanding efforts to help others – from high-profile stories like Captain Sir Tom Moore walking 100 laps of his garden to fundraise for the NHS, to the thousands who volunteered for local COVID-19 support groups to help the most vulnerable in their communities. And on Thursday evenings, when we came together to clap our appreciation for NHS staff and other key workers, the army of volunteers around the country were also in our minds.

Our very own shining stars

Here at the MS Society, Shining Star awards are our way of recognising the contribution of our volunteers. We know that many of you have been finding new ways to support our community and ensure services can continue during the lockdowns and restrictions, and we’ve already heard some wonderful stories:

  • We’ve been delighted to award a Shining Star to Joy, a Fundraising Volunteer from Oxfordshire, who raised £1000 for us by sewing and selling face masks.

  • We also gave one to Chris and Anne, Communication and Fundraising Volunteers from Humberside. They set up online Zoom socials to keep their group stayed connected, and gave IT support to help other volunteers and members join the sessions.

  • Another Shining Star recipient is Ellen, Administration Volunteer from Herefordshire, who has been contacting over 15 people a week by phone during the COVID-19 crisis, to help them stay cheerful and support with any problems they have.

These are just a few of many inspiring examples of our volunteers supporting others when help was most needed this year.

With the festive season coming up, we know that many of you will be organising social gatherings – even if they have to be done online. Why not use one of these as an opportunity to present a Shining Star to a volunteer you know?

How do I nominate someone?

Anyone can nominate a volunteer for a Shining Star, through a quick and simple process which you can find here. If we receive your nomination(s) by 10 December we’ll do our best to get the certificates to nominees (or to you, if you’d like to present them personally) before the winter holidays.

We’re looking forward to receiving your nominations and hearing all the amazing stories of volunteering impact and commitment. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
