Keeping people safe

Safeguarding
We’re committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of everyone who uses our services as well as the wider MS community. If you have concerns that someone may be at risk of abuse, you should report it to our safeguarding responders group.

Find out more about recognising signs and symptoms of harm and how to report them here.

It is also essential that anyone in a relevant role (including volunteers and service providers) has a disclosure check in place. Find out more about safe recruitment of volunteers and our Disclosure Procedures here.

Health and Safety
We share a responsibility for the health, safety and wellbeing of all our staff and volunteers and people who use our services. The Health and Safety resources on the volunteer website explain how to use our risk management system to make sure that all of our activities are safe, and what to do if an accident does occur. Find this information here.

Involving volunteers
If you’re responsible for recruiting, managing or supporting volunteers, there are some principles of good practice for doing this. You need to make sure the relationship you build up with them does not become contractual, or begin to look like an employment relationship.

Our Volunteering Agreement is a clear statement and framework for how we support and engage all our volunteers, find this here.

Handling personal data
We’re an organisation that handles personal information, including sensitive information such as health data. So we need to make sure everyone who works or volunteers with us understands their responsibilities around confidentiality, data protection and information security.

Find out more about how to make sure we fulfil our legal data protection requirements, respect people’s privacy and their right to control the data other people hold about them here.

Financial rules
To make sure we’re raising, using and holding funds according to good practice and various regulations, we’ve put in place financial rules (Appendix four of the Group Handbook).

All Coordinating Team volunteers must be aware of these rules - not just the finance volunteer. Find out more, here.
